Found on my front porch

FloridaHogs Oct 07, 2006 07:18 PM

Found this little guy on my front porch. I am in North West Florida (as west as you can go). My first thought was a water snake of some sort, but it does not look like the ones I have found in the past. Non aggressive, and let me hold him. Any thoughts?
(sorry the belly pic is so bad.)

Your instincts were correct. That is a banded water snake, Nerodia fasciata. Just because a genus or species of snake has the reputation for being ill-tempered does not mean that all individuals of that type are.

This is the second time I have found one of these guys. The other was just as sweet. This one just seemed brighter than what I remembered.

Again, individual snakes can vary, not only in disposition, but in color as well.

Nearly every baby I have had born here or have found was calm and very alert. Actually a great little "pet" at that size. Seems they will stay pretty calm too if kept. Watching them feed is quite entertaining.
I guess it's only after the 1,000,000th bird has tried to eat it that it gets an attitude, huh?
How are your southern hognose doing?
