New to Thayeri and to say Hi

tarantulakeeper Oct 07, 2006 11:08 PM

Hi, my name is John Bell and I was directed here by Greg Huston. Thought I'd introduce myself. I received a male thayeri from Greg last week. I was attracted to this species after doing some research on the Mountain Kingsnake I was given. I teach fifth grade so I had the little guy delivered to me at school. My students thought the baby snake was really cute and so did my wife! She teaches fourth grade just down the hall from me and she stole the little guy for her room. Well, of course, my students were very disappointed that we lost our baby snake, so....I am getting a female from Russ Bates on Tuesday! I can honestly tell my wife it's her fault I had to add another snake. I keep two corns, a ball python, and several tarantulas in my classroom and have too many more at home. I'd like to thank Greg for the link. I know there's lots of good information here about my new snakes and I hope to learn a lot. John

1.1 emeralds
1.1 caulker cay boas
1.1 sonoran boas
0.1 honduran boa
1.1 corns
1.0 ball python

1.1 L. m. thayeri (soon)

And I have a couple of Russ Bates' babies from this year. My advice to you is don't let your wife get her hands on it! You're going to be happy.

Thanks for introducing kids to snakes, that really helps.

passing it on to the little ones. I'm raising two myself that will one day hopefully realize the enjoyment of a snake collection as well as seeing them in the wild.

Thanks John for doing you part to educate children/teens about herps. It's amazing the fears parents strike into their children based off their own fears of snakes as a child or adult. If they just knew the truth!

Hi John, and welcome to the wonderful world of Variable Kingsnakes. A tremendous amount of excitement lies ahead! Greg is a very knowledgeable guy and faithful to his animals, get to know him well. The thayeri he sent you is first quality. Be sure it is well cared for and don't loose track of it, should you decide to breed thayeri at some point that male would be important. I have a milksnake phase male sibling to your snake that will become an important member of my collection.

You were wise to follow Greg's lead. Spend time both here and in the main kingsnake forum and eventually you will discover a wealth of information on the snakes and their husbandry.

Did Greg happen to mention a young lady by the name of Maria that posts here on occasion? In addition to thayeri and many other critters, she is also very fond of tarantulas and maintains quite a collection. If you don't already, you should get to know her. She's a very smart cookie and a real pleasure to talk to.

Enjoy your new thayeri and I look forward to your posts.

Welcome John. Your wife already claimed that green guy for her own, huh? I can't blame her, I had a hard time selling that one. They don't come in that color very often, and he had a great head pattern. I'm sure Russ will set you up with a nice one. Maybe you can breed them in a few years.

You should probably clear out some of those spiders to make room for all the different Thayeri

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I just got notice that my new female from Russ is on her way. Maybe I'd better keep this one secret.
Actually I am very happy to see my wife's progression. She teaches fourth grade and a large part of her social studies curriculum is Arizona. Last year I convinced her to let me adopt a sonoran gopher snake to keep in her room so she'd have something 'native'. A good friend gave me an Arizona Mt. King to add to her collection. She and her kids are excited about the new baby and I'm excited for them. Besides, he's only 40 feet down the hall and I still get to feed them all and clean up after them.

I sure am enjoying the pictures. Keep them coming! John
