Breeding Northern Pacifics

Jasonmattes Oct 07, 2006 11:38 PM

I'm about to put my norpac down for the winter and am planning on breeding her next year and was wondering if its better to cool the pair seperately or together? I'm guessing it doesnt matter since they normally will den up together anyway but thought somone smarter than me would have an idea.
I attempted breeding once before and I kept them separated while cooling and introduced them after the female had eaten a few times and they did breed but I never got any babies. The female appeared gravid and refused food so I'm not really sure what happened. I'd like to try and prevent that this time.

I've had success breeding nor pacs by hibernating the pair together and separately. I don't think it matters like you said. I actually put the pair together as soon as they are out of hiberation if they were separate. Give the female good access to heat and there shouldn't be any problems... Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Did you keep the pair together until the babies were born?

Jason,
I don't ever get to work with the Northern Pacifics, but I do work alot with the Southern Pacifics. I have noticed over the years that when the male is done copulating with the female, he is out of here until the following year. Given that, I personally would separate the two after breeding.
I also agree with you. I dont think hybernating the two together matters. If anything, I agree with it. I like to try and copy wildlife conditions as much as possible in captivity.

Good luck with your breeding, and hope to see some pics soon!

Yes, I kept them together until babies were born. Separate them for feeding obviously but together the rest of the time.
