The male dodn't make it and the female might be loosing the fight

reid_3rd Aug 06, 2003 08:20 AM

We got them to the vet fisrt thing yesterday. They got something that was caused from shipping. The vet said that what they cought brings them dowm fast. He also said that is wan't our fault it was the persons fault that shipped them. He said that they should have been here over night but instead he shipped them through regular mail. They both weight 52g and the female has lost 2g over night. They put a feeding tube in them and are giving them meds. I am suppose to call back and check on her later.

that here in Canada the only legal(and ethical) way of shipping live animals is by air. I've worked as a shipping/receiving clerk and know just what kind of "care" the major couriers take with their packages.

I hope the female makes it through for you

Reid,

Sorry for you loss. You should hold the sender accountable. No animals particularly reptiles & amphibians should be shipped through regular mail. More than likely, they didn't catch anything. They probably overheated and dehydrated. It's the middle of summer. Even overnight shipments can be risky.

They did caught something it starts with an F I am not saure how to spell it i would have to ask my husband anyways it is caused from stress and what it does is eat their insides and it does make them soft and really sick all of a sudden. It makes them not want to eat and they become really weak. I just called back to check on the female and he said that he just got done giving her another round of fulid and some more meds. He said that she seems to being doing good and he said call back about 5 but he says that he believe that he is going to keep her again over night. He is pissed about the guy who we got them from. He wants us to get in touch with him and let him know what he dod was wrong. But I can't seem to find him. He was on here but he isn't no longer so I guess that I just won't be letting him know. I am hoping that the female will get better and after awhile I will get me another male. So if any of you know a good place in South Caroliona or North Carolina to get healthy Spur thights please let me know! Thanks

Starts with an F. How about flagellates??

reid_3rd Aug 06, 2003 04:11 PM

Yeah I believe thats it. Did you have that happen to you?

rattay Aug 06, 2003 06:16 PM

Especially with freshly imported tortoises. Flagellates are a protozoan infestitation or parasite. They live in standing water or algae which turtles/tortoises eat/drink and get infested.

Living in groups in farms or at pet suppliers makes it easier to pass on to all other turtles/tortoises and I suppose shipping can make it occur the same way. But shipping overnight would not have prevented flagellates from occuring.

Sounds like your tortoise is in the best hands now. I wish you and her the best in getting through this.

Shipping helps flagellates by stressing the torts. This decreases the release of glucocorticoids from the torts adrenal glands which decreases the torts immune function. Thus the torts cant fight the flagellates and the flags multiply.

No but as Rattay said they are pretty common. They are pretty easily treated if caught in time. Treatment usually is with metronidazole (flagyl). High fiber diet will also help to prevent this.

They did caugth something it satrts with an F. I am not sure on how to spell it but it some from stress. What they do is eat their insides and makes the weak and not want to eat and it does happem all of a sudden. He said that the female was doing better since the last time I called. He might let her over night again. He is pissed about the guy that we got them from. He wants us to get in thought with him but we can't find him. We found him on here but now he is no longer on here. So I guess he will never know. We are going to give the female time to get better and then we are going to get another male. So if any of you know a good place in south carolina or north carolina to get spur thighs please let me know! Thanks!

If you remember anything about him, maybe we can figure out who he is. Then we will all know not to deal with him.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope the other one makes it. Good luck.

We wentg back to our paypal records and found his email and name. His user name one the classifieds was coldblooded_novelties and his name is Frank. Do you think that I should email him or just leave it alone? The vet says to let him know that the male has died but do you think That it would really even matter? We have had trhem for 3 weeks. Please responed and let me know what you think.

Country-girl3 Aug 06, 2003 06:45 PM

I think you should email him and let him know what has happened. If he is any kind of breeder/seller, then he should offer to refund your money or send you a new tort.

If he happens to come and tell you that he will not do anything because his (warrenty) has expired, then you know he is not a reputiable seller. MHO

rattay Aug 06, 2003 07:21 PM

He should know that his animals are sick enough to perish. Like Kelly said, if he's a decent businessman, he will refund or replace.

Good luck!
