Breeding beardies bad?

rezinhit Oct 08, 2006 05:31 PM

So i have had a male bearded dragon from some time and and recently bought a female at the chicago expo. I took her home and introduced them and he was bobbing his head and his beard was all puffed and everything as i expected, but i didnt expect him to run over and bite her neck-area and try to mate right then and there. I guess she wasnt having it because she kept moving her legs and trying to get away and after about a minute he stopped and they both went back to bobbing their heads. I think she was already bred this year. Anyways as i am trying to breed them, what should i do? Thanks Phil

It is always best to quarentee new animals for at least a month, three months being better before introducing to your current collection. This ensures no unexpected diseases or parasites are introduced to your currently healthy collection.

After quarantine is over you can introduce the dragons and give them a chance to get to know eachother. Mating, if both are ready typically takes place pretty quickly, as you already saw. Several couplings is usually enough to ensure several clutches for that year.

Thanks a million man. So it isnt considered irresponsible to breed these animals this late into the year, or yearround, as long as the calcium and weight is kept up obviously. I breed snakes and this is not the case so much Also like i said the female bobs her head and waves her front arms, but as i have left them together for a while no actual intercourse has occured. My male is going crazy! Thanks again for the help. Also im currently keeping the new female in the cage and my male on the 4 x 6 foot ledge in my room hes lived on for the past 2 years, any problems there with breeding? Thanks again Phil
