mating

I have had an approximately 8 year old female boxie for about 2 years. Thursday I got another boxie about 4 years old and took it into the vet for a general checkup. I'm thinking boy, vet thinks girl. Today they met for the first time and are now "hooked" up---for 2 hours. She is draging him around and is trying to hide in the substrate. How long does this go on? Shall I splash them with cold water? =) Or just let nature decide when enough is enough? Thanks for any help, surprised owner.

I would say let nature take its course. It's possible you have two males and one is picking on the other. Then again you may have a pair now. They mate/fight in the same manner. Either way, make sure the enclosure is large so they can get away from each other and include may visual barriers. This is important. I recently adopted a female who was severly over mated. She can no longer be bred now because of it. Just keep an eye on them. Good luck.
