Improved tortoise pen

DaviDC. Oct 08, 2006 07:12 PM

This weekend's project was updating the tortoise pen. I bought a 6x10'kennel panel & used a couple of gate panels I had for the ends. I covered the top with wire fencing & now my tortoises are completely safe from predators. Best of all, I can now see the tortoises from the kitchen window!

Congratulations! What a nice and safe enclosure!
Is is necessary in your region to consider digging animals too, or are you safe enough with above ground fencing?

Digging animals aren't a concern. The day after finishing it, I saw a large crow sitting on top, watching the smallest tortoise. If the pen hadn't been enclosed, I'm sure the bird would have gotten the tort & I would have wondered what happened to it.

We have some huge crows around here, as well as hawks. My two larger russian torts would be fine in an open-top pen, but my little guy could have been too enticing to the larger birds around here.

I think the $10 spent on furnishing i nice top for my outdoor enclosure was well worth the piece of mine. I even went and bought some chicken wire to put under the enclosure so that animals couldn't tunnel in (and vice versa). I'm sure the chicken wire will rust and fall apart soon enough, but I currently plan on rebuilding yearly anyways.
