My Otis is Gone

the4thmonkey Oct 08, 2006 07:48 PM

It has actually been over a couple off weeks now. I miss him terribly, he was my buddy who went nearly everywhere with me. It has actually been a couple of weeks now, but I just didn't have the heart to log on here.
For about a month he had breathing difficulty that came and went. He would have good days and bad days. He never lost weight, quit eating, bobbing his head or going after the ladies until a couple days before he died. He was treated as if he had a respiratory infection and went to the vet several times. But upon autopsy it was found that he died of heart failure. His heart was enlarged and not working effectively, causing fluid to back up into his lungs. There was no reason for this to be found.
I hope Otis was just an old guy, and that his last years with me were good for him and that he was happy. After watching all 4 of my collareds die this summer I have questioned myself whether it is even right for me to be keeping them. But I have these 3 new little girls to watch over.
Mariah, the one from west Texas, is a face banger. She has literally torn her pretty face up on the screen top of the terrarium. I was hoping it would hurt so bad that she would stop, but she hasn't. When she is not banging, she is digging. She wants OUT and does it in any cage I put her in. She will be disfigured, at the very least, or she will get repeated infections from it that kill her. She is pretty good when I handle her.
Snicket and Chimera, the 2 girls from southern Utah are doing well. Chimera still offers to bite me, but never follows through anymore. She wanted to bite a lot at first, and I just let her gnaw on the end of a finger until she figured out that it was not getting her anywhere. She does not like to be handled and I have not gotten very far with her. She is beautiful, with lots of yellow and blue.
Snicket is the smallest one. She has electric yellow around her neck and is starting to get some blue and green in her legs. She is the easiest to handle now that I can finally catch her. These lizards seem much harder to tame than the others did. I wonder why? Anyway, I don't have any pictures yet because no one will ever sit still long enough. Hopefully soon.

Goodbye Otis

valerie, i am so sorry about otis. i really know how you feel though. ivan the girl died of/was having trouble pooping because her kidneys had enlarged but no one knows why they enlarged. no one knows why any of my lizards have died and it's gotten to the point where i can tell by the look in their eyes that they are goners. very depressing indeed.

as for your face banging girl, have you tried the all screen cages? i use them for my collareds. some people don't like them saying that they don't maintain temps well but i have never had a problem. the entire cage is soft screen and collareds can just climb all over them. it isn't uncommon to see mine hanging from the roof. sometimes they even sleep on the side of the cage hanging. one time when i had some in a regular cage after the screen cages, they just glass danced all the time, so my guys now prefer the screen cages. aside from the fact that one of them is 4ftx2.5ftx1.5ft they actually have extra room because they can climb the sides plus the screen is soft and not near as face grating as metal screen.

the only other thing i can think is to give her places to climb so she doesn't have to jump or maybe try covering all the sides and slowly taking the paper off the front.

That's a good suggestion for caging, Vonnie.

Valarie, I'm sorry you lost your special boy. I know how awful it feels.

I'm sorry to hear about Otis. It's hard, but maybe it was just his time. Poor guy. I hope Mariah does better soon. One of my uros has a chunk missing from his face from bashing into the glass - he split his lip in a couple places and the loose piece between just fell off. It healed that way and has been funny looking for years now (you can see bone and teeth, but with no problems because of the hole. I hope Mariah settles down for you!

Sorry Valerie, gee that is such a shame, I know this guy was pretty SPECIAL to you, I know how that is. I'm sorry about all your loses this year.

He was sure a beauty ! Loved his colors , He was a lucky guy and had a great home.

I can't wait to see your new girls, love their names, sure are classy As far as the jumper/face smasher that is so frustrating, the only way I stopped any wc's from doing that is to let them out for runs, seemed to calm them.

Hope they all do wonderful for you , and hope you feel better soon as far as Otis. Talk soon
