Hi. I just wanted to ask what chameleons are the best for beginner chameleons. I've been a herper for a years now and I am considering getting a chameleon as a pet. I've read up on them and can care for them. My question is what are your opinions are the best as a first time cham experience?

Definately the Vieled or Panther Chameleons are by far the "easiest" chameleons. Easiest is in quotations as hopefully you are well aware of their strict requirments being as you have been a herper for years. It goes without saying do lots of research and they make great pets as long as you follow their criteria for a healthy captive life.

0.0.1 Rose Hair Tarantula-Clarise
1.1.0 Panther Chameleons-Diablacito & Mamacita
0.0.63 Panther Chameleon eggs in the incubator!
2.0.0 Cats- Gatsby & Watson
2.0.0 Sugar Gliders-Wilson & Winston
Too many fish to count.

Cheers,
Nick

I would suggest picking up a Veild and "testing the waters" a bit. They are hearty, maintan similar requirments to Panthers, are beautiful plus, let's face it, they are pretty cheap too. For a couple hundred bucks you'll be able to get a good Veild and a complete set up and go from there. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I just needed a few opinions from people that already have them. I have been leaning towards a Panther or a Jacksons. I haven't considered the Veild until now. I'll have to look into them more. Thanks!

Glad to see your taking the necessary steps in order to care for this animal. As stated before veilds are cheaper but if you are doing your homework correctly you should have no problems with husbandry for a panther or jackson. Be sure to do your research though and learn all you can of its requirements as well as buy from a known reputable breeder. Even with that though, you can still have illnesses so being prepared ahead of time with a vet that specializes in chams is a MUST. Have a fecal done as soon as you acquire your new cham. Recently I acquired a female from a reputable breeder that was infested heavily with Coccidia so you never know. Good luck to you and feel free to ask more questions if the need arises.

Yes go with a veiled. Jackson needs are harder to replacate. Plus panthers cost so much and your bound to make a few mistakes. (not that killing a veil is the right thing to do cus they're cheap) But I'd be a lot madder if I killed a $300 panther vs. a $75-$100 veiled. I think male veils are way better looking anyways.

good luck it's a fun hobby to get into and learn about.
