new leo not eating

crazyjharris Oct 08, 2006 11:02 PM

i just bought a grown male 80g. he was at a rep. show in a trio with 2 other females, looked like siblings.i put him in with my female. she is still doing great, eating well. it has been 2 days now and he hasn't eaten yet.from his size he looks like a big eater.the two get along fine and lay together in their hide.he just isn't interested in food at all, mealworms, superworms,or crickets.i didn't ask what his previous diet was,i should have.hes has pooped twice,it's more moist than my girls, but not diherea. the substrate is calcium sand.could he be missing the two girls of the trio he came from?

You said...i just bought a grown male 80g. he was at a rep. show in a trio with 2 other females, looked like siblings.i put him in with my female"...you should always quarantine a new lizard for at least 6 weeks so that you can make sure its healthy before putting it in with your collection.

Maybe the new one isn't eating because he hasn't adjusted completely to his new surroundings...or maybe it has a problem.

You said..."the substrate is calcium sand"...calcisand has been reported to cause impactions...I would switch to something else, like washed sandbox sand. If you want to provide calcium in their cage, put some in a small lid and they will eat it up if they need/want to.

thanks for the input. i'm new to this and didn't know about the quarentine. he looked really healthy, fat with bright color. now his color is dull, i think he's getting ready to shed. is not eating normal around sheding time"?

I don't think any of mine slow down their eating when they are shedding, but I have heard of lizards doing that for a day or two.
