Under Tank Heaters and Heating Pads

pythonnewbie Aug 06, 2003 08:44 AM

I read somewhere that people use regular heating pads to put underneath their ball cages...anyone else out there do that and if so is it safe? I have a new ball in a tall shoebox size container and my 10-20 UTH is not keeping it warm enough. If I use lamps will it make the plastic to hot?

Thanks
Jessica

Where are you measuring your temperature at? I have never had a problem with a UTH not heating enough, I ususually have a problem with getting them cool enough. Make sure you measure the temperature on the substrate directly above the UTH, that is where it will be the warmest, I keep this at bettween 89-92 during the day, and 85-88 at night. I measure this with a indoor/outdoor thermometer/hydrometer that I picked up from radioshack, it has a sensor on a wire that I just set above the substrate.

Yup, that's the exact one, even took it in the the quality department where I work at to have them make sure it was calibrated properly, and it was.

I have never had a problem with a UTH not getting the hot spot up to temps. Is there any chance you have too much substrate in that spot? If you have too much newspaper or mulch on top of it the heat cant get through.

Thanks you guys. I will go to radio shack and look for that thermometer. I ended up moving my thermometer and also getting a different one and looks like things are working out okay. My UTH won't stay sticking onto my container and I think that is part of the problem. I'll get it all fixed. I've only had my python for 2 days now and I want to make sure I am doing everything right for her.
