Care and Feeding of Great Basin Gopher

Chris_C Oct 09, 2006 12:40 AM

I just caught an apparent hatchling (~12" long) Great Basin Gopher snake. I assume that it will probably eat F/T pinkie mice without problem. How much, and how often should I feed it at this age? Is there anything else that I should supplement its diet with? What size cage and type of substrate would be best for this snake, and at what temp should I maintain its cage? Any other tips would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for the info!

It will probably eat as often as you feed it so be careful not to overfeed it. It should eat pinkie mice once a week. Give it a hidebox and probably around 80 degrees. For substrate u can use lots of stuff but avoid cedar shavings. I don't think it will need suppliments but switch over to rat pups scented with a mouse when it gets big enough. That's all i can think of.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Pits. I'm almost in the same boat as you. I have an '05 Pacific Gopher I caught out in W. Lancaster, CA. I keep her in an 12"X12" cube for now (til she starts getting bigger). She's capable of eating fuzzies. I feed her 1 or 2 ever 5-6 days. Where'd you catch the snake? Good luck.
