This is one of two melanistic baja blue rock female
yearlings which were produced by the first black
female I've ever seen or heard of. I produced the
original black female in '03. She was sold to Tom
Greb along with a male as hatchlings. After a year
and a half, I got both back and to my surprise, the
female was a weird dark smokey gray in coloration.
Reminds me of the 'ugly duckling' story.
By the time she reached her third year I finally got
her bred with a nice "normal" blue phase male.
Unfortunately I lost her due to egg retention but not
before she had laid a few eggs of which only three
went full term. Out of those three '05 hatchlings from
the black, I had 1.2 sibling hatchlings. I sold the male
along with an unrelated female from a different clutch
as I was male heavy that year but kept the two darker
females.
I hope to breed the two melanistic females back to
an "uncle in law" so to speak only because he was
from the same clutch as the original black female. He
and the rest of the '03 sibling clutch were all "normal"
and bright blue in coloration except for that first
black female.
Thanks for reading this bit of trivia,
