Hi, my name is Dave and I am new to the group. I have read that the african bullfrog is a hardy species and I would really like to get one, I am wondering if they are a good frog for beginners? Thanks for everything and take care
Sincerely,
Dave

I have a couple bullfrogs I found in a neighbor's yard. Where they came from is beyond me because there aren't and streams or ponds nearby. I've had them for a couple of months in a tank with a couple places to get out of the water but they stay in it 90% of the time. I feed them crickets (coated with D-3 calcium dust every 2 or 3 days) they eat a LOT. Between the 2 of them they'll eat 10 to 15 crickets a day, sometimes begging (that's right begging) for more. (Their begging consists of both of them floating facing the front of the tank by the glass croaking, when I go to look at them they'll swim to the rock I put the crickets on when I feed them. ) It's really funny, I didn't know they could beg!!!
So far they're doing great and growing fast. Oh, I also have a filter in the tank that the bottom is submerged and the water flows out the top like a waterfall. They leave a lot of dead cricket parts in the water from their fecal excretions which I have to regularly rinse out of the intake of the filter. So far I'd say mine are easy to take care of and fun to watch. Don't expect a tongue to lash out to get the crickets though, you'll be disappointed. They jump and snatch the crickets in their mouths. And I was so looking forward to seeing that too.

As long as you research them and figure out all the basic needs of african bullfrogs they can be very rewarding and hardy captives. Ive had mine going on 11 years and have never had any problems. If you have any specific questions feel free to email me at cwells@ilstu.edu
