Dieing babbys?

jasonw Oct 09, 2006 01:06 PM

How comon is it to loose a couple snakes from a clutch? I had one I sold reportedly die and that one I replaced free of charge but since then I have had one more die and another one I fear is on its way out. This most recent one started doing what I can only explain as star gazing like in Boas. The one that is not doing good absolutly will not eat. I have tryed live, FT brained and ever parts and it wont have any of it. I am just wandering if it is com,on to loose 2-3 out of a clutch of 17? Thanks in advance.

I dont get it iether "How have you been by the way?" The good news is so far all the rest of them are doing fine. I only have 5 left. 2 are hold backs and they are doing great and the other 2 are doing great. The one that wont eat however I dont hold much hope for.

Jason, try raising Jackson chameleons. I would see one, one minute and 15-30 minutes later he would be dead.

Someone told me that jax have high mortality rates to attract flies for other babies. I disagree with that theory. jax are born alive, drop to the groung in a goo, then they run (if you can call it that) in all directions. If I had better luck with them, I may have never got into corns. I really am more of a lizard herp guy. I sat and watched interaction between my jax for hours and days on end. I could tell if a female was gravid by color and reaction to a male.

I may do them again someday.

Older Jax are pretty easy. Good UVB, no hotter than 78 at the top of the cage. Babies I tried to keep below 75.

They just will not drink from a dish, and they drink a lot.

I never took pic of my setups and different ideas. But my last was by far the easiest to keep.

A large screen cage, coated window screen is a most. A very large pothos in a tupperware container. I covered the dirt with golf ball size gravel so they could not intake any soil.

To water i had a small bucket with a pin hole in it, just get it to drip about 1 drop per 2-3 seconds and sit on the cage.

Also large blocks of ice sat on the cages to water.

Keep humid 50-60% for adults Spray a few times aday.

It got to where I rarely sprayed. Fun lizard, but they will eat you out of house and home.

It is not uncommon to have a few non feeders and even a couple of unexplained deaths... Although i believe that some deaths can be avoided the fact remains that not all hatchlings are meant to survive..

Sorry for your losses and good luck with the ones that survive.

I agree with Mike. Some corns never eat (and subsequently die) and others appear to do fine and then unexpectedly give up the ghost. Losing 2 or 3 from a clutch of 17 would not be considered unusual from what I've seen.
