brumation question

Dfrieden Oct 09, 2006 01:32 PM

is it possible for a snake to brumate any season besides winter if the temps are cold enough? Also if a hatchling isn't eating and wants to brumate is it ok to keep the temps up and try to feed him until he stops trying to brumate?

Yeah, when I bred corns I brumated them in the spring. You are basically the "weather" so you can brumate them anytime. I probably wouldn't brumate in spring then next year do it in fall for obvious reasons. The next question someone will have a better answer but I never brumate til atleast 2- 2 1/2 yrs old.

On Applegate's website there is an article where he talks about brumated baby snakes like pyros and such that are difficult feeders and it goes on to say that they come out of brumation with much better appetite and willingness to feed. Here is the link to his page. Good luck.

I always brumate my baby snakes, feeders and non-feeders. The only babies that I keep warm are my future breeders. I like to grow them the first winter in order breed them at 18 months old. I still brumate them the second winter. I breed mostly cal kings and they do great in brumation.

I always brumate when the outside weather turns cold and warm them up when it warms up. Although I live in Arizona, I do live at 5,000 feet in elevation so we do get winters.

I've never tried cycling them at different times of the year.

I also breed cal kings, how long do you brumate them for? Temps? It's exciting, I don't get to talk to other CalKing breeders everyday.

I always wait on nature, which usually means from November until March. I already shut my snakes down for the year. I will bring them back up aroun March 1st-15th.

My grey-banded kingsnake was beginning to go into brumation but i am trying to take him out of it and i have raised the temperatures. When do you think he will be back to normal and want to eat? Will it take days or weeks to undo it? I decided not to let him brumate because i felt i couldnt keep the temperatures cool enough. Is this ok?
