Question for expert Leo owners

gilawop Aug 06, 2003 09:11 AM

G'Morning...I have a customer that owns a beautiful male High Yellow Leo He wants to get a female to expand his collection. The question at hand is does he need to get an adult or can he get a baby and raise it up in the same tank as his adult male? Thanks for the insight...Angel

But as far as everything I've ever read you can house a male with many females, and I've never seen any publications that say the female had to be of similar age.

unless he wants the baby to be eaten, bullied to death, or gravid before she is big/old enough they should keep them separate. I have 3 adult males and every one of them will try to breed with anything that even smells like a female leo lol.
And one of them will try to eat anything that moves so I definately wouldn't recommend putting a baby in with any adult, male or female.

he really should get an adult leo. first of all, baby leos and adult leos should be seperated because of the size difference. the bigger leo can frighten the baby and cause it to not eat which stunts growth. or there is also the possibility of the baby being attacked or even eaten!!!
another problem is that the male could mate with the female when she is still too young...this is very dangerous to the female. it is best to get an adult female then, and after a month or two long quarantine period, they can be put together. just make sure the owner is prepared deal with possible breeding activity (taking special care of the female, incubating the eggs, and taking care of the hatchlings later on).

You can't put a baby or juvvy in with an adult. The adult will eat it. And even if it is a bit too big to get et, it will not thrive as it will be bullied and lose the competition for food. Also, females should not be exposed to males until they are of safe breeding weight and age, or the males may try to mate them prematurely and they can be injured. Geckos ofsignificantly different sizes should not be housed together. If he wants to get a baby, he needs tpo raise it to adulthood in a seperate enclosure until ready to breed.
