Heres the pic I fell in love with!

From what I understand, chances are slim that anyone breeds this species. Most likely they are w/c or captive hatched, regardless of what the seller says. I am fairly new to the species, and have only had one for about 7 months now, so I am just repeating what I have heard from others.
If you are serious about getting one, be prepared to have an "empty cage" most of the time. It is a shy species that likes to hide most of the time. Mine comes out for a few hours in the morning to early afternoon, but then he is gone for the rest of the day. They are very beautiful monitors, and I really like mine. However if you are looking for something you can take out a lot and hold, this is not the right species for you. I find this to be a very interesting and gorgeous monitor, regardless of it being a "hands-off" species.
There is at least one other person here that keeps them, and he is very knowledgeable. Maybe he'll have some more info for you. Good luck!

Thanks dude for your help. I just saw one recently at a show and I loved it! Good luck with Pollux!
I fell in love with them too. Until I bought some. Then I hated them. With a capital H. People tried to tell me but I didn't listen.
What was it exactly that made you Hate them so much?
Some varanids like prasinus, milenus, yowonoi and some doreanus are spectacular in beauty but make deceiving captives.
To shy, too nervous, always in hiding, these never are enjoyable to work with.
I constantly see peoples wanting them, but once they do end up regretting there investment.
i have told many MANY people not to get the Melinus. a beautiful monitor, great access to strong healthy babies, but that doesn't make them a good choice. they are a poor captive choice.
folks that say "they're great" and suggest them to others simply haven't spent enough time with them to properly comment on them.
being really purdy and economical can really okey doke folks, for a while : )

Thanks a lot guys. This is my first ever post on ANYTHING and the proexotics guy answered...COOL! I saw the first picture of one on proexotics.com, and these guys are like the Bob Clark of monitors lol. Anyway thanks for all your replies and I wont be buying one. Ill stick to the easier ones. Probably. I saw one at a show in august and I just nor realized how bad captives they can be, poor little guy was snout-rubbin all over the place. Since theyre part of the mangrove monitor group, I didnt expect them to be very-hands on. Still the most beautiful monitors though. Ill start with a red ackie from proexotics or rare earth. Thanks guys!
Ryan

Oh, Robyn, ill buy a temp gun from you guys soon. Cant wait for your baby prasinus, i wanna see pics! Love your website!
Ryan
Not all monitors of the indicus group make poor captives, my all time favourite monitor is jobiensis. In my opinion the prettiest and most interesting Asian monitor
