I don't think anyone has to live on a farm to have a good sized turtle pen. I DO think that many folks think in terms of the minimum amount of space a turtle requires, rather than the maximum they can turn into habitat for people and turtles alike, when they construct pens.

I recently met a guy who's working at a local pet store who well I'll put it this way... I am not impressed.
He said he's got over 100 box turtles then stood there & told me they only need like 1x1 feet of space each.
I was APPALLED!! I'm a big believer in giving as much space as I possibly can to all my pets. My aquatics could use more space but I can only afford & have space for tanks so big. My painted is in a 55 gallon alone, I saw 4 RES in a 55 together at the pet store. I guess RES don't much space either?
My male painted will never be a large turtle like a female RES is and one day hopefully I can get him in a bigger tank but 1x1 feet for a box to me is like keeping my painted in a 5 gallon. I can't even imagine doing that!
I know we can't all give them miles of space but room to move around a little is at least a basic requirement. sheesh!
Anyway.. had to vent about pet store guy.. lol
