House Gecko Questions

girly_girl3 Oct 10, 2006 11:25 AM

Hi,

I have a couple of House Geckos and some questions (information for these guys seems to be very limited).

First question: I have 2 in a 10 gallon tank/terrarium. I know 1 is female, not sure about the other one. Should I get a wire/mess topper that will make the tank twice as high, or is the 10 gallon big enough?

Second question: There is a plastic vine like "plant" in there. I was thinking of going with a real plant to help keep the humidity levels up. I mist a few times a day and it seems to be dry in there. I've looked around for plants for the House Geckos online and can't seem to find any information. I also have a Crested Gecko, but got a pothos for him that he loves...and found that information online.

Third question: I originally had 2...and one got out (so bought a 3rd one and now have 2 in the terrarium). Little escape artist he/she is. I haven't seen it since and it's been a week. Someone mentioned to me to go in the room he got away in at night and shine a flash light and I'll see him on the wall. I've tried and no luck. Do you think he'll be ok or am I going to find a dead gecko soon? There are a few spiders in my house, they appear every so often, along with ants and the occassional fly. How can I get him? And then will it be ok to put it back in w/ the other two at that point?

Fourth question: I bought 1/4" crickets and they don't seem to really eat them. Is there a reason why? Is there something else they'll eat? My boyfriend's blue bellies gobble them down as soon as they're fed. My guys don't seem to be eating them. Also, how often should they be fed? Daily or every other?

Fifth (and hopefully last) question: Substrate. I have some that I got from a pet store that seems to be a mixture of bark & dirt. Is this good or should I use something else? Also, I don't know how exactly going about cleaning up their feces since I can't see it with the substrate. How often should it be replaced?

I cant overly help with everything else but I know what it is like to try and catch these guys. My suggestion would be wait until day time and look around the windows as they wil sit there and soak up some heat. Don't worry about it dying really since there called "house" geckos for a reason.

Thank you. I'm thinking I have 2 types of geckos in the terrarium that were sold to me as House Geckos. One is more bumpy w/ a blue spot on it's belly. The other is bigger and has a flat tail, that seems to look serrated some. Any ideas?
