Rat Escaped from my new Freedom Breeder Rat Rack

Hoopy Aug 06, 2003 10:09 AM

Ok.
I just got a new freedom breeder large rat rack. I know you guys think they are way to expensive, but I really am a guy that likes conveinence and I hate do-it-yourself projects. Anyways, I got the new rack and set up 3 bins with 1.3 groups in each. I come home from work at lunch yesterday and find that one of the bins was pushed open just far enough for a rat to get out. I looked in that bin and all the rat were still in there bin except 1 (a little odd that they all didn't escape). Anyways, I started to ssearch for the female that escaped. I found her in my hunting sweater right next to the cage. She had just given brith to 18 baby rats and put blood all over my sweater and on the carpet (yuck). Did you escape because she didn't want to give birth with the other rats around? Also, anyone with Freedom Breeder racks: Does this type of thing happen alot? I mean, this momma rat pushed the bin out and escaped. How does that happen. Needless to say, I put duct tape on the bin so she couldn't get out anymore. Thought it was a alright story with a happy ending for the female rat and a bad ending for my prized wool hunting sweater. Talk to you guys later.

Be happy you found her. In two weeks you could have had 19 rats running around your house. That would suck.

Dan posted the best anti excape thingy on Thu May 29. Take a look and see if tyou could do something like that. Duct tape will eventually be a sticky mess.

Get some bungy cords and run them from support to support in front of the bins, on the back side of the two main supports on the front. I use like 2 16inches so when I clean and what Not I just unhook the two and let them hang out of the way, the rats will continue to open the tubs and escape, alot of times theyll hang out right in the area there because they can go back in the tub for water but sometimes they take offbut bunges work well, hope this helps, Jason
