Dimmer Question

ta2edskin Oct 10, 2006 05:45 PM

I was wondering if I could take a dimmer switch, and hook it up with a extension cord. That way I could control a uth with it.
Thanks Steve

Yes, I recommend using a junction box to conceal the wiring and to be code of course.

If you use a double gang junction box you can attach a outlet to the dimmer and have an extension cord with a dimmable outlet. They make those by the way.

Just a little bit of creative wiring and the double gang box can have a dimmer on one side and two outlets on the other, one dimmed and one on full (if you want one not dimmed) I made some like that to dim the heat source and run a fluorecsent light at the same time.

When ya'll say, "extension cord," are you talking about one of the cheap, common, household type cords or do you mean a real electrical cord (something bigger than 18 ga.)?

When I make extension cords its for some heavy usage. All my reptile cages have 12 gauge wire. My extension cords have the same, as well as the facility wiring.

Build yourself one of these. Dirt cheap and work great.
