Differences between Western & Mexican?

kaydee Oct 10, 2006 07:10 PM

Hello. I've seen a Mexican for sale that I quite like. What are some sure ways to tell them apart from westerns? I was told he was about a year old and looks to be around 10-14" to me. Is that normal? He is so tiny!

The technical differences between a western and a Mexican are hard to see. A Mexican hog has 3 azygous scales on top of the head behind the rostral scale. A Western Hog has 6 or more.

There are some subtle color pattern differences as well, but they are harder to define. Westerns have a more clearly demarcated pattern. Mexican hogs pattern edges are less distinct.

A yearling male Mexican hog should be around 12-16 inches long. They aren't big snakes.
