Acceptable Disinfectants?

renland Oct 10, 2006 09:17 PM

For rack/Rubbermaid users, what cleaning solutions do you use to clean your bins? How often do you disinfect? I use paper towels as substrate which stays fairly clean, but I would like to thoroughly clean the tubs and would like suggestions on the best product. Thanks.

Disinfectant dish detergent, or 10% bleach. ! cup of bottle bleach to a gallon of water,. With bleach rinse well as with dish soap, but with bleach air out. Off gassing. plastic I presume 30 minutes if rinsed well.

I have never once used anything more than soap & hot water to clean my Rubbermaids...

This is one of my home made racks, i still use lids & large binder clips for added safety..

I use bleach at the shop if an item is changing from 1 type of animal to another. Or getting tossed on the shelf.

Not sure if that is very logical? Dish soap seem to be very very good. But if a dish it's a utility bin it can be used for a bird, frog lizard rodent etc. So we try to bleach.

Wipeout works really well too. Just make sure to air it out really well. I don't use racks/bins yet but I'm headed there shortly...

Chlorhexidine Solution( generic Virosan, Novasan) I use to use a Bleach solution until others started talking about long term harm from Bleach. For the last 7 or 8 years I have used Novasan. It's used to disinfect by Vets and doesn't pose the dangers Bleach does. There are several suppliers in the classifieds that carry it. I buy it a gallon at a time and one Gal. lasts a really long time as you must dilute it. Good Luck.

years of keeping and breeding reptiles ( snakes and lizards ), never had a problem with good old bleach diluted even with these " other " disinfectants having been around. Birds, small mammals, dog, and cat cages / areas were cleaned with the bleach solution and recommended by many of my vets and animal health authorities when the dog parvo virus was upon us back in the 80ties. Now using bleach on amphs cages might be a different story but the fact that we also used bleach solution for fish tanks.........use and rinse or wipe clean. Bleach is suppose to dry clean with no residue aftermath. Yes, I have seen some arguments but in my opinion they really don't hold much water of all of my years of using bleach........

FUNNY YOU SAY THAT!! b/c when i was an intern at a vet here in va, a dog had parvo and the only thing that you were allowed to wash anything with after being in the room with the dog was bleach. there was a towel full of bleach on the floor you had to wipe your feet on and wash your hands with bleach....i remember messing up my silver jewelry... but to make a long story short- we got the dog to survive... so i completely understand the bleach thing...its just hard to air out and all... maybe i'm just impatient and do soap and hot water.... unless there is something deathly ill- then i go to bleach
