Breeding lizards as feeders

Daniel J Oct 11, 2006 05:17 PM

Is there a cheap lizard that's an easy and good/fast breeder that I could use as a feeder. I have some lizard only eating snakes that can get tricky when I can't get my hands on some anoles or house geckos. It gets a little expensive too. Any recommendations?

I would say anoles and house geckos. Once you set up some breeding they are hardy and simple. While neither have large amounts of eggs they are somewhat troublefree. That of course means having bugs to feed them etc. Depending on how many you need you may want to stick with buying outright.

Well, I'd like to have so I'd have about 3-4 to feed a week, so that'll be quite a few on hand at all times. But I breed roaches and worms, so bugs won't really be an issue. I was kinda looking into skinks, since some of them lay up to 10 eggs at a time. But I'm assuming the rate would be slower too.

You will never have a steady supply of babies if that is what you are looking for. They are not like rodents i.e. have longer periods of incubation/ gestation and breeding seasons. Wild caught animals are another choice(not easy and most certainly will bring in paracites.) There are stores like LLL Reptile on the net that sell feeder lizards in bulk. Might be your best choice.
