wayne13114 Oct 11, 2006 06:03 PM

I was wondering if anyone had an idea where to find a smooth greensnake in NY counties, habitat types, methods. Iv'e been looking to get photos of this snake and also be able to cross it of my lifelist

I also heard about a book on native herptofauna of NY and was wondering if it was true and if so by who and when it would be available
thanks for any and all help

Hello I have found and photographed Smooth Green Snakes on Eastern Long Island, NY(e. suffolk county)almost every year. Like the E hognose snakes they arent as rare on long island as the DEC and other organ's think they are. just have to know where and when to look. I usually find and photograph E. Smooth Green snakes in overgrown, grassy fields under boards, trash, disgarded carpets, etc and along the edge of where the woods meets open fields. Usually I find an abundance in april/may depending on the temps and at the end of Aug. I have photographs, however I still havent been able to figure out how to upload phots on this forum, lol. you can send me an email. I hope this may help somewhat thanks again Dave

Wayne,

Originally the book was slated for Sept., but I think it'll be later this year. Among the authors, are Dr. James Gibbs and Dr. Glenn Johnson of SUNY,, Al Breisch, Reptile & Amphib specialist for the DEC and the late Dr. John Behler from the Bronx Zoo. THey had solicited for photos in 2005 and several folks on this forum had photos selected for the book.

As for smooth greens, I know of some folks who find them in eastern NY and along the hudson valley, but I've never been with them specifically. Same thing holds true in the Hudson valley and capital region....lots of hognose and smooth greens, you just gotta find the right habitat.

thanks for the info matt, looks like I might have to plan a trip to the hudson valley area and try to get 3 snakes of my life list at once.
