Any Wildcaughts since Fall Started?

John Fraser Oct 11, 2006 09:16 PM

Hi All,
With Fall officially here & in full tilt, and actual daylight now below 12 hours, alterna hunting is or has wound down, right? For the most part it has, however it CAN & sometimes does still happen, all you need is 1 decent night if your in alterna land. I have only heard of 1 alterna found since Fall started on Sept. 23, congrats to Doug Beckwith & Norm Nunley for finding that great looking snake on Sept. 29th I beleive. I know a handfull of other people who have found or seen alterna in October, Jeff Adams, Joe Forks and I think John Hollister has as well. My cousin Brad Stiles, wife Barb & I joined the October wildcaught group in 2004 with the male in the photo below. Here is a "In Situ" or as found photo of a 27" male graybanded kingsnake that I observed in the wild on October 6, 2004, at 5 miles East of Sanderson, Texas

I've seen two in late November in the last three years. One was DOR at approx 8:00 AM and one was flipped under talus at approx 1:30 PM.

None in the last couple trips, last one I saw was in July.

It has been fairly chilly and the moon a bit bright of late here in northern Brewster. Norman and I will probably try our luck down in southern Brewster late next week if the weather is half way decent.

While it has been a number of years ago, Norman has told me that he has found 2 alterna in southern Presidio county as late as November 11th. We may try our luck there again through November.

Seems I always say this, I think I have one more trip in me, lol! I believe if I keep at it I can still get one this year, so I will be eyeballin' the weather and make a break for it before mid Nov.If you can find an indigo in Feb. it shouldn't be that much harder, lol!

Feb is prime time fro indigos, I have found them all year long, especially a little farther south. Find them all deer season long in the valley.

Mike, down our way I know that but I was surprised to find one in Feb. in west Texas. It was pretty darn cold and rainy to boot. This yearling was tucked under a slab of concrete and was totally parasitized with a bum shed going.
