Vets & Melissa Kaplan & soaking, oh my!

aero_tiff Oct 11, 2006 11:51 PM

See, now that Ive found people who kow what they're talking about, I'm going to flood this forum with questions. :D

If anybody is in South Florida (particulary Miami) and could recommend a vet they know of, I would be forever grateful, as it may soon be time for a 3rd opinion regrding Houston the sickie.

I've had a lot of recommendations that include soaking her in various things like Lipton tea (vet recommended) and Gatorade of Pedialyte (vet and forum recommended) and my boyfriend is telling it won't help because a reptile's skin is impermeable to liquid... can anybody back this up, or at least give me some ammo when I'm arguing with him that they can absorb water? He has a BS in Biology and Marine Science, I seem to just spout BS...and I need back up.

Annnnd I see that Melissa Kaplan has a lot to say about reptiles, but I've heard her info may not be reliable... does anybody know how reliable or unreliable the info she provides might be?

Thanks so much guys!

I have to agree with your boyfriend, soaking is not going to help a lizard with a resp infection very much at all.

Antibiotics are the only thing that may help. As far as hydrating, Sometimes with very sick/weak animals they can hydrate an animal subcutaniously (hope I spelled that right) just means putting water UNDER the skin.

But getting some water into his mouth in small slow drips would be good.

try this link. there is only one vet listed in miami but perhaps some other towns near miami have herp vets.

soaking is good because the lizards can drink, they can't absorb water, but a sick lizard may not want to drink
