Housing Question - vivs to racks!

kennny Oct 12, 2006 02:12 PM

Hi Everyone,

I've about to move into a smaller property, due to new work commitments, but dont want to reduce my collection. I've been looking into building a simple rack system and looking at many of the commercially available systems they say that a 24inch tub is large enough for a 3.5 ft/2kg snake.

Firstly is it really ok to keep a 2kg/3.5ft snake in a 2ft tray and secondly if it is ok is it bad to move them from a 40x18x18 tanks into a 24x18x6inch tray?

any advice would be really appreciated.

kenny.

I had a 1500 gram male ball python that had lived in a 30 gallon tank all it's life...
I moved him into a 40 qt sterilite box. Not only was he fine, but he ate and shed better in the tub then in the tank.

Snakes are very adaptable.

I have 6 3' long cages. I have found that my more finicky eaters do better in smaller sterilite tubs. I had one female that wouldn't eat when I got her.(She was 1000g) After 4 weeks, I moved her to a 28qt sterilite tub..much smaller. The day after the move, she ate instantly! If you ever see how they are found in the wild, many are found in termite mounds in cramped quarters...sometimes multiple animals in the same space. So no, I don't think it is bad to move to a smaller cage.
