Sperm Plugs

vegasbilly Oct 12, 2006 02:31 PM

This male just shed and there was a sperm plug attached. My question is does the presence of sperm plugs neccessarily mean the snake is sexually mature?

This snake is quite small for his age(3.5 yrs.) as he has been a finicky eater for the last two years. He usually takes one small rat every 3 weeks.

If he retains his % of yellow he'll be a nice breeder and I was wondering if he'd be a potential suitor this season.

Thanks,

Bill

At 3 1/2 years, your male is certainly mature enough to breed and the sperm plugs confirm it. I'm surprised you haven't noticed some before this as they can show up as young as 1 1/2 years old. He's a nice looking animal...a Biak I assume?

Living here in Vegas humidity is always a constant battle. Before I built my new room I could literally dump a gallon of water on the floor of my garage and it would be bone dry in 2 hrs!

Subsequently nice intact sheds were a rarity - especially towards the tail. Now that I've built the room w/ a Rainmaker mist head in each cage, I can better regulate the humidty hence this nice one piece shed that had the plug on it.

It was sold to me as an Aru hatchling but I'm thinking Biak all the way - certainly has the chippy attitude! Below is a pic of half the room -other wall is virtually the same w/out the little cage w/the hold back ETBs in it.

I was in So. Cal. for a long time so I know about humidity issues. With decent cages I had no problems though. During a shed cycle I upped from once a day to twice a day sprayings and never had a problem. Any chondro can be nippy so the fact that it is doesn't rule out it being an Aru. You have pictures? That's a nice setup you have there.

Oh, I have other "Arus" with iffy attitudes, Sorongs that are as tame as a Corn Snake, and Biaks that are just plain mean. All are aggressive when its dinner time thats for sure.

Like I said, this was sold to me as an Aru though it shares certain traits w/Biaks as well. Documentable locality data seems to get more blurred by the year.

Now, if I could get my Scrubs to get reliably tame I'd be in Heaven!

Looks like they're going "Mine, mine!!" like the seagulls in Finding Nemo.
