Some salamanders found over the weekend

tspuckler Oct 12, 2006 03:36 PM

These were found at Salt Fork State Park in Central Ohio on October 6th. The weather was cool and windy.

Pic 1: Red-back - there were many of these found, are were the "lead-back" phase.

Pic 2: Two-lined - this was the only one seen.

Pic 3: Dusky - they were these aplenty.

Pic 4: Slimy - by far, the largest one I've ever seen.

Cool sallies Tim, thanks for postin' 'em up! I gotta get out and look for some here in the lone star state, they're tough in my neck 'o' the thornscrub!

Tom,

Nice to see some OH sallies getting represented here. Hard to tell with the whole "leadback" thing going on, but your redback looks to actually be a ravine to my eye. The torso just looks stretched out to ravine proportions.

Again, nice finds though.

Jason

Man I love OH sallies...

Jason,

You may be right. I never really considered ravine salamanders -next time I'll bring a field guide!

Here's an old red I found in Hocking Hills in May:

Tom,

Nice! I haven't seen one that dark yet, but a couple that have come close. I also haven't seen any adults in that area, just larvae and plenty of spring sallies. Have you seen any 4 toeds there? They can be pretty easy to turn up in early april.

Thanks, that's the first red I've found in 15 years. The only other one I've caught was a young, bright red one at Salt Fork in the early 90's.

I did not find any four-toes, I was leading a group of high school students, so I was somewhat limited in how much time I could spend in the field. We did manage to find a baby softshell turtle (as well as several adults) while canoeing, in addition to a black rat snake and a green frog.

As far as salamanders go, there were many of what you'd expect - redbacks, duskys and two-lineds.
