reptimals Oct 12, 2006 05:01 PM

hello, just curious to whay rats are the main rodent that gets fed to snakes? i just fed my boas some gerbels and they seem like they have more meat to them and are chunkier then rats... are rats better then gerbels or hamsters? or are gerbels/hamsters better then rats? or does it not matter at all? THANKS!!

Can't really say which is better nutritionally.

Rats are very prolific breeders and can attain a decent size for all but the largest of snakes. Hamsters and gerbils are smaller and I believe the litter sizes are smaller as well. So they cost more to produce. Add to that the perception that hamsters/gerbils are cute and cudly while rats are vermin to be exterminated.....

IMO, there are only two kinds of "good" rats:

1 - Dead ones to go into the belly of one of my snakes
2 - Live ones to make more babies destined to be dead ones going into the belly of one of my snakes

LOL, to many snakes to list, last count:
13.26 BRB
11.16 BCI
And those are only the breeders

yeah i guess it makes more sense to breed rats, however rats actually make better pets then hamsters/gerbils, they are smarter and usually more mellow when raised correctly...
