Sexing by shed

zugzug31 Oct 12, 2006 05:24 PM

I saw somewhere that you can sex a snake by its shed. I was curious if anyone had the link for this or might have some pictures.

Thanks

I have heard of people sexing snakes by searching for sperm plugs toward the vent of the shed. This is not an accurate way to determine sex. Although you could be sure you have a male if sperm plugs are there, just becuase they are not does not mean you have a female. I also would like to add I have only seen this in Ball pythons. Corn snakes under a year are best sexed by inverting the hemipenes "popping." Juviniles and adults can be sexed by tail length and shape, but it takes experience to recognize this, or pictures in books or online can help. Popping is still a great way to determine sex in adults but it is more difficult and inexperienced "poppers" may just think everything is a female. Probing is effective, I am not sure of the exact sub-caudal count but I would say around 4-5 sub-caudals for females and 8-10 for males. Both popping and probing should be done by experinced persons only.
