How many leos can fit in a 50 Gal tank?

DarkBlades Oct 12, 2006 07:01 PM

When my brother got the leos, they were in tank that consists about 50 gallons. I believe its custom made and its made out of a glass, pixie glass or something, my first question is "Is this what terriums are made out of?"

Anyways, when we got the tank, we believed it was too big for our house, and it was. Long Story short, I still have the tank, a little dirty but im going to clean it up right now. Could I use this for my leos and more leos to come?

I will take a picture of it once its clean.

The tanks measurements...

Length X Width X Hieght
36 X 16 X 19.5

(CALCULATED THE GALLONS, AND IT SAID IT WAS ABOUT 48.5 GALLONS)

I don't really think leos should be housed together, period. I've seen too many geckos with bite wounds to risk it. Even two females can, and will, fight. I'm sure you could keep 3 or 4 geckos in a tank that big without being cramped, but why risk having a gecko get injured?

yes i agree with begunwithaletter. i had my girls housed together once apaon a time in a tank much larger then that, they did awfull! they all got along without visibly fighting but they looked ugly and thin. once i seperated them they gained weight and blossomed into beauties. i just deleated my old pics of them but the difference between then and now is remarkable. here are some current pictures though.

Theres ways of getting leos to be mates. If one absolutely refuses to have mates, I will give or get them a 10 gal tank.

no offense but why are you asking if you wont take anybodies advice? If you ask any REAL breeder or someone with experience in housing several leos 30 , they will tell you its not a good idea.
i'm not trying to be a meanie, it just seems a little strange.
i know it sounds cool and everything but its really not if you're the geckos behind the glass.

Agree, but I do house 3 females in a 20 gal. Never a problem and awesome breeders. I am planning to move them into my new rack once it is built. I agree that any leo living by itself will be better off...food and injury free wise. If you house leo's individually, you can monitor their food intake more than you ever could housed all together.

I take all I learn from kingsnake.com into consideration, im new to the leo business and thats I came here before anywhere eles, most people here have experience. I like that.

I want happy geckos as so healthy geckos.

Did you just call that person a "meanie"? Everyone here is giving you very good advice. Take it or leave it.

so are you planning to have 2 or 3 female be each others' mates?

'cuz I can tell you right now you ain't gonna be getting viable eggs outta that scenario :P

AndrewFromSoCal Oct 13, 2006 03:35 AM

I believe he meant mates as in friends. :P

DarkBlades Oct 13, 2006 10:31 AM

Housing several together is asking for trouble.

Seperate the leos, and save the big tank for a nice Beardie

Good luck,

Everyone has their own methods in keeping leos. Some well known breeders keep their leos singly in a rack system. The main reason for this is because they have so many, easier to maintain, easier to breed, saves space and it's way more economical. It's also easier to keep tabs on their health and food intake. At the same time, a fair amount of breeders like to keep their leos in groups. As long as there is only one male and the females are of the same size. Space is the only issue at hand.

I for one have kept up to 4 females and 1 male in a 40in. X 20in. custom tank for close to two years with no ill effects. I always keep an eye out for the health of my geckos. The reason why I keep them together is becuase I just simply like to have a naturalistic setup in my house. My tanks are the centerpiece of my living room. Trust me, if my geckos were starting to deteriorate due to them not getting along in this setup, I will surely change it.
