Beardie cannibalism or intentional killing?

falcos Aug 06, 2003 11:58 AM

Could anyone tell me why a beardie would want to eat another one even if they are well fed?

I woke up this morning to my 8 month old male with the 7 month old female's head in his mouth. He basically crushed her head and wouldn't let go. It was COMPLETELY disturbing and SAD.

Any ideas or info would be appreciated.
Thanks

This type of problem can occur with beardeds and most other lizards if they are not fairly well matched in size. The feeding response is very strong in young beardeds and anything that moves and (even remotely) fits in their mouth can trigger it.

The male definitely grew larger than her in only a few months.

Ok, so it should be fine if I introduced a female that is similar in size.

He's been renamed to Hannibal.

Thanks for the response.
