Mealworms OK??

AncientCritters Oct 12, 2006 10:38 PM

One of my new dragons jumped off his bark and tossed up some mealworms. He ate a bunch this morning and ate some crickets later in the afternoon. The other dragon ate the same and is fine. They had a long soak this afternoon. He shows no problems and even ate another small cricket that was hiding and popped out. The husbandry is all correct. Just a little concerned that I saw this happen and never seen it before with the other dragons I raised. Maybe im worried for nothing and he just overate. In the photos he is the red one. To bad these pictures dont show how deep of red he is. One of the prettiest I had this young.

Mealworms are apparently quite difficult for babies to digest because of the hard chitin shell.

It maybe like u say that he over ate, but if I were u, I'd hold off with the mealworms till baby is older.

If u want variety, try small silkworms as they have a really soft body.

Hope that helps.

yeah the hard exoskeleton of mealworms are hard for babies to digest. This can cause impaction which i believe can lead to paralysis? Stick to crickets the size bewteen a beardies eyes. Those are some gorgrous beardies you've got there by the way.
