If you have a good drainage bottom or a false bottom with a waterway, you rarely need to change the substrate, although you can top dress it occassionally with some fresh material. I find that my tanks stay pretty stable for about 5 years or more without major overhaul or complete substrate changes, provided the plants are trimmed regularly. That's the beauty of having biologically recycling tanks with live plants and frogs. Other than cleaning off the glass, replenishing water in waterways, or sometimes doing partial changes, and trimming plants, there is little maintenance. They just don't get stale and stinky, and the frogs stay healthy.
