Tiger/Fire Sallies

Torey Aug 06, 2003 12:09 PM

I have a very cool Fire sallie! Initially she hid in the substrate and came out to eat at night. Now she's out and about almost all the time and eating like crazy.
Question: what's the dif between a Fire and a Tiger, besides the outer appearance?

Fire salamanders come from Europe and tiger salamanders are found in north America.

I know you said besides appearance, but tigers get larger, are bolder, and are generally more enthusiastic about food from their keeper then fires.

Both great pets, but if you are looking for visual entertainment, definatly get a tiger. They're hilarous when they're going crazy begging for food.

Thank you very much, Rob!!! Now, do you know WHERE I might find one of these? They are endangered, I think, in NY.

Rob, another question: if BOTH Tigers and Fires burrow during the day and come out at night, does the Tiger become gregarious?

Fires don't burrow. They prefer to hide under cork bark and such. I know that my tigers would bury themselves all day, and when I came into the room would run right out jumping up the side of the tank trying to get food from me! They're quite entertaining.

As for where to get them from in NY...I'm not sure. I do believe that tigers are protected in NY, but I don't know for sure. You'll have to check with someone else about that.

You should be able to find fire or tiger salamanders fairly easily from online people.
