I will be looking at adopting a group of boxies sometime in the spring (after more research and building a proper outdoor vivarium)
Anyone know of a group in the Bay Area that has boxies for adoption? If not, how about any group that would ship?

Here's a good place to start:

Thanks, but I've already been to that site. Unfortunately, there are no branches of that organization near the Bay Area. Also, they state that they only adopt to locals.
I can purchase my own turtles when the time comes, but I just hate to have to do that when I know that there are so many out there that people don't want anymore. I'd even be willing to pay comparable prices for adopting: it's the principle of the thing.
It's unfortunate that groups in our hobby are not yet as organized or established as they are in the dog world. If I wanted to adopt a chihauhua, all I'd have to do is Google "dog adoption, san jose" and I could adopt any one of a hundred dogs this weekend.
If you haven't already, try contacting a local herp society or even herp vets, or try Turtlehomes (link below).
I think one reason there aren't as many organized rescue groups for herps is because alot of people simply dump their unwanted reptiles in the nearest park or vacant lot when they get tired of them.

Take a look at the Bay Area Amphibian and Reptile club website: www.baars.org . The adoptions coordinator lives in San Jose and usually has box turtles for adoption (that's where my two beautiful three-toed girls came from!). Email her directly since she doesn't normally list box turtles on the adoptions page. There's also a link on there to a turtle rescue in Castro Valley.
