Pyxie frog hiss/ croak?

Goomba Oct 13, 2006 06:22 PM

Hey everyone. I have a pyxie frog, and s/he is about 3.5 inches in diameter. Its dorsal stripe is starting to turn more and more green.
Alright, well basically, I was cleaning his water like 20 minutes ago, and I nudged him while he was burrowed. He then plumped up full of air and made a hiss noise. Afterwards, when I was re-arranging the fresh water dish and dirt, he proceeded to make the faint hissing noise, this time coupled with a few snaps at my plastic tool (used to arrange dirt/ avoid his teeth ). Whilst he snapped at the plastic and anything that was moving, he made a curious honking noise, like a rather deep but short croak.
I noticed previously that when I fed him roaches he made a similar noise, but I want sure if it was the lobster roaches defensive hiss, or what.
So....now that I’m positive that my Pyxie is making these hisses and croaking honks, I must ask, is this normal? Could this be a definite sign of specimen sexing, or is it still too early to tell? Any and all information is much appreciated, thank you in advance.

I know that american bulfrogs will make a honking sound as they are spooked and hop into the water. Not sure if it is a sexable deal or if all do it. I would assume pixies would be similar in that aspect. I dont recall ever hearing my pixies honk yet but they are only about three inches so far so Im not sure. I know male pacmans will croak all the time.... Jon
