Silkworms cured my leo's hunger strike

Nightflight Oct 13, 2006 11:05 PM

Hi all,

Some of you out there may already know about feeding silkworms to geckos.

I had a gecko that suddenly got to be a very picky eater. Wouldn't eat mealworms or crickets after a while (my other two love them). After taking the gecko to the vet 3 times, a vitamin shot, calcionate drops, fecal tests, and bug slurry, I finally got her eating again with silkworms.

She would eat waxworms through the hunger strike period but I didn't want to go too far down that path as it would lead to even more health problems.

Tried coating mealworms with waxworm guts. No joy. She figured out that one and wouldn't eat it.

Silkworms proved to be the key. She chowed down 5 medium sized ones tonight. Loves them as much as my others love the occasional waxworm.

Silkworms tend to be a bit expensive and little harder to get where I'm at but they are turning out to be a pretty good solution. I've tried phoenix worms before. She wouldn't eat those.

So, I don't know if this will fix your problems with hunger striking geckos but it appears to have solved mine. I imagine geckos, like people, have different favorite foods so trying a few different ones might be the key to solving problems like these.

Nothing beats a trip to the vet though for certainty.

Im glad your gecko started eating, that is great! i had a similar problem with a rescue gecko. he wouldnt eat anything except for a pinkie mouse very rarely. then i discovered wax worms, i havnt tried the silkworms but it would have been my next step if this didn't work.
so anyhow i got him eating waxworms. i let him eat about five a night but thats all he got. then i started coating them in mineral and leopard gecko dust. he wasnt very happy once he realized they were starting to get healthy on him, but he soon got over it. then i started feeding him a worm and a cricket together, i fed by hand so i had to hold them together. he didnt really want the cricket but i wouldnt let him have the worm without it. anyhow he finally got over it and started to eat crickets. the catch after that was he would only eat out of my hand!!! i had to do it everynight!! so i started holding the cricket on the floor of the cage and he learned crickets came from the ground and not the sky. he started attempting to eat on his own but was out of practice. well i gave the guy away but i gave his new owner directions and i have a feeling he is doing fine.

sorry for blabbing to you all....
