Reptisun 5.0 or 10.0?

sned25271 Oct 14, 2006 12:23 AM

I need to replace my Reptisun 5.0 and I was wondering if it would be worth getting a 10.0. My setup is for russian and pancake babies. The light is 9.25" from the top of the substrate. I know the 10.0 can reach 20". Would a 10.0 be better for the tortoises or would it be too strong for them?

10.0 is a waste of money. Tortoises usually do best around 5.0 for tropical and 8.0 for desert. I kept Indian star in a 7.0 ESU bulb and is more than 12 inches above the substrate and have no problem so far. And Indian star has higher UVB need than Russian and Pancake.

If 5.0 work fine I will not change it.

I use the 10.0 for my box turtle and my hermanns tortoise. I like it. I noticed an increase in their activity and eating when I switched to the 10.0. With the box turtle it is 18 inches from the substrate and with the hermanns it is 12 inches away.

Since your light will be closer the 5.0 would probably work fine, or you could use the 10.0, and just make sure they have hides to go into if they want to get out of the light.

I use the reptisun 10 with a reflector, and my russian seems to like it a lot (I've had an 8 and a 5 in the past). There is an added benefit to the 10 in that they will last for up to a year, instead of for only six months like the other tubes. To check the output on various tubes/lights check out this site (go to the 2005 survey - there are some really interesting results there).
