Hairless mice

rptlqueen Oct 14, 2006 10:37 AM

Has anyone found a good source for these? My hognoses are only eating pinkies right now so I'm not too worried but I may be getting an adult soon and I would like to keep them on hairless rather than "furred" mice. I've been looking through the classifieds and I have browsed close to 50 feeder breeder sites with no luck.

I eould not worry about the hair. As long as your snakes are healthy, it will be digested. If you are still worried, try rat pups.

I'm not really worried, but I would prefer to use hairless mice. I already assumed I could use rat pups for any males I may get, considering their small size, but I would like adult hairless mice for my females.

I'm guessing that you won't find them from the commercial suppliers, only fancy mouse breeders....and I am guessing they wouldn't want their mice going for snake food. There just isn't a demand for the frozen feeder people to have any interest in meeting. You could try to get ahold of some yourself, but that might be a challenge and I don't know if you want to keep rodents. Hairless rats might be easier to find if you want to produce your own food, or velveteen rats, which seem to be occasionally available in pet stores (I have one, she's super sweet) as pets. OR you could just feed mice with hair....your snakes won't care.

I agree. For what it's worth, I haven't seen any evidence of hair impaction in hognoses, although I admit that I haven't focused on that subject. Also, in my experience, the remnants of a mouse (feces) really doesn't look any different than other colubrids, indicating to me that Easterns don't have any problems with hair in the diet. I just looked again at your signature and saw that you have 2 westerns, in which case there REALLY isn't anything to worry about in those guys. Good luck.
