Snake skin belt - care

Colchicine Oct 14, 2006 10:41 AM

Last year I found a women's fashion snake skin belt at an antique store. It appears to be somewhat old (20-30yrs?) and made out of a corn snake. It was cheaply made and can't be very valuable except to a weird herpetologist. I would imagine with it being the skin of an animal it would need some type of moisture. It does look it is a little dry, so I was hoping that someone here would be able to give a recommendation of what to use to moisturize it. I have oil for a baseball glove, but I suspect that wouldn't be appropriate.

You know, when I was younger, I'd skin all sorts of dor snakes and I think I remember using something like "saddle soap"
on the tanned and dried ones... but you better wait 'til you get some better advice...

Mink oil works pretty well to rejuvenate and protect- but I usually use plain glycerin. Seems to absorb somewhat better and restore flexibility.

Good luck!

Hello--
I have a burmese python hide that is used for educational purposes. It is at least 30 years old. Mink oil seems to do the trick to keep it moisturized and supple. At one time it was displayed on a wall, and it dried out quite quickly. Since then I've stored it in a large, heavy-duty zip-lock type bag. It retains the conditioning treatment much better. I only take it out when doing a ed session.

rgds,
althea

Thanks for the suggestions, looks like I'll try mink oil since I won't have to order it. THANKS

and don't feed it live mice, they may bite it. Provide a humidity box.

Geez, you may know alot about hognose, but you know very little about cornsnakes.
