Hi,
I apologize to all of you for which this is a dead issue, and I am sure that there are many of you. However, I just got back into the hobby and last night I saw a copy of the legislation that the New York assembly passed on exotic animals as pets in new York. This legislation outlaws all the larger Python and Monitor species.
In High-school i kept many reptiles, including a male reticulated python and a water monitor. Both very friendly animals. I kept them in appropriate cages for the sizes they were and found them both extremely rewarding especially the Water Monitor(His name was Mozart).Neither were captive bred and really fared well but unfortunately my retic succumbed to Stargazer disease.Anyways, I am just writing because I really think some aspects of this legislation are bs. I mean I even suppose I can understand outlawing the larger Boids and the Niles, especially because of the combination of the disposition of the Nile and its availability in shoddy pet stores. However, at least in my days it was rare that you found a water monitor in a pet store (I know I searched for one- i even went down the village-where even at 16 i thought they would be.) It just seems that to an extant this legislation was formed from a witch trial mentality instead of being based on genuine scientific fact. It seems to me the legislation was clearly intended to stop their existence as opposed to being geared to any pragmatic husbandry related issue as other animals with nearly similar requirements were not banned. I just want to see if people agree with me on this.
I Am Zachary Liben and am finishing up my senior year in college near home and am currently trying to acquire an ackie monitor or argus. (which i was doing before this- because admittedly, if you can find an interesting smaller animal you should- so if anyone knows of a breeder in ny- that would be great- Wow- they are breeding monitors now- awesome!best
