Ruthveni Roundup

bobhansen Oct 15, 2006 01:01 PM

Here are pics of some 06's. Ruthveni are certainly more 'squirrely' as hatchlings than other mexicana (and thus tougher to photograph), and larger as well. Fortunately, they calm down nicely as they grow.

Cheers,

Bob

Hey Bob. I think you know I love kingsnake photo art, and you have skills! Thanks for sharing, we need a lot more of this kinda thing.

I see a couple baby Ruthie's in there I wouldn't mind having, great clutch.

Where did the name Plateau Mtn. kingsnake come from? I've never heard ruthies called that before.

Do you have some special software to make up those multi pic posters? That's a very nice group of ruthveni, and a great piece of photo work.

Vichris:

I wondered who'd ask about that common name. I've always thought that "Queretaro" mountain king was tough to say, in English or Spanish. Plus, the majority of this species' range lies outside of the state of Queretaro, in Jalisco and Michoacan. One could call it "Ruthven's" kingsnake, but that isn't especially descriptive. So, I've borrowed the name "Plateau Mountain Kingsnake" from my buddy Tim Burkhardt, who is using that name for ruthveni on his website of Mexican herps (http://www.mexico-herps.com/).

The poster-like image was created in Photoshop, by dragging separate images onto a common canvas. Glad you liked the result!

Cheers,

Bob

I agree, Queretaro is very hard to pronounce even in spanish. I'd never heard the term "plateau mtn kingsnake" but I do like it.

I have photoshop 3.0 and I sure don't see a way I can create a canvas. You must have a more advanced version or I'm missing something.

I find it hard to believe they are more 'squirrely' than other mexicana but I guess it is possible. I get some big Thayeri babies as well from one female, could be the parents more than the species/Ssp. I like the new name too.
