help....is she gravid? or just really fat?

dmlove Aug 06, 2003 01:05 PM

This is my girl Artemis. She is only 11 months old, and i have not bred her. Ive had her since March. She has looked like this for about two months, all bloated and fat, looking gravid. She eats like a maniac still, and hasnt been digging. I thought she was gravid with infertile eggs, and possibly eggbound, so i brought her to a vet. She said that she did look gravid, but when we had an xray done, no eggs could be seen, but that was because, as the vet said, sometimes infertile eggs dont show up on the screen for lack of calcium or something. She got a vitamin injection and a calcium injection. a month went by, no eggs. I brought her back to the vet and had another xray done, again, nothing. when palpating, you cant feel anything. Im kind of concerned, she has had plenty of opportunities to lay, i put her in the laying box PLENTY of times overnight, but no eggs. I jsut dont want my girl to die or get sick because of this. Or is she jsut overweight and in need of a diet?im probably worrying way too much, i do that sometimes. when you feel her belly it just feels, BIG!!!!! ewll thanks, here are some pictures. Also, please some comments on her!! lol, these pics were taken about 5 minutes ago.

and here are two that kind of show the belly.

When you went to the vet, I am sure they weighed her. Did she gain any weight between the visits? I think (I may be worng, I have been once....No, I was just mistaken...lol...) that she would reduce her eating to make room in her belly for the eggs...

I have 2 females that are 14 1/2 mths. old, & their bellies look just like that. The thing to remember about dystocia (egg-binding) is to judge by her behavior. Here's a link to Melissa Kaplan's page on dystocia in reptiles. Based on her description, I'd say you have nothing to worry about. Good Luck & keep us posted!
