Easiest going snake?

UroTamer Oct 16, 2006 12:02 AM

What kinds of snakes don't get too big, aren't poisonous, and are friendly and don't mind being handled?
I'm hoping to start an education and awareness program on reptiles and amphibians to educate people on the importance of research and set-up for "pets" before buying them.
Right now I'm thinking either a corn or a gardner??
Thanks.

Corn snakes would be one of the top choices. I would also submit for your consideration some of the snakes of the genus Pituophis, namely Gopher snakes. The 2 that I have (a Pac and a Great Basin) are both WC, but they are some of the tamest, most interactive snakes that I've run across. I also read on the king forum that Easterns and Florida Kings are great and easy going snakes. Good luck.

I think any of the rat snakes would be a good choice, with the red rat (corn) probably the best in your case. The corn is a beauty and combined with its modest but not too small size, makes a great attention-getter.

Why didnt anyone correct the whole gardner thing. Its Garter snake by the way and i dont think that would be a very good species to use as a example. Your best bet is Corn Snakes or Rats

UroTamer Oct 17, 2006 01:38 AM

So why not a GARTER snake? And what are the promising traits of Cornsnakes and Rat Snakes? Which do you have and why do you think they would be best? I want something that isn't going to get too long, is friendly, and will attract attention (a WOW factor) Thanks

Looks like garters and greens are out, not legal here, they're native. So it'll be a corn or a gopher.

I like ball pythons for education. They stay managebly small, but yet are big enough to show. Most of them are very tame and tolerant of handling (like all snakes there is the occasional individual that has a bad attitude). They also have spurs and other physical features characteristic of pythons that are fun to talk about with aspiring scientists.

My way of not studying when I should be...
1.1 Red Bloods (Cartman and Bebe)
0.1 Boa Constrictor (Victoria)
0.1 Albino Burm (Butters)
0.0.1 Desert King (Miles)
1.1 Bearded Dragons (Stan and Wendy)

I guess I never really looked at one close-up. Sounds like one to consider. Thanks
