More Glossy talk

Glossy's belong in this thread, right? I know they aren't as big as Bulls and Pines, etc but my little guy can be pretty tough when he wants to. Anyway, I like mine, and hope my rattling on about him doesn't bore anyone.

Are there other's that have them on this thread? I've noticed that mine seems to like it cool. He is never seen on the warm side. Doesn't hide much either. Just lays flat out so all can take a gander. When the weather cools off he seems to go off food much later than my Desert King as well. Is it just that mine is odd, or are these Glossy trates?

Actually, this forum is intended only for snakes that belong to Pituophis - Pines, Bulls and Gophers. That said, I love Glossies! I haven't tried my hand at keeping them but, living in AZ, I know a few people that have. Most folks I know around here just keep them at room temp without supplemental heating - that goes for most of our native Colubrids, actually. They seem to do quite well.

I notice my Glossy, though from a definitely different locale doing exactly the same as yours. He does not seem to like the heat @ all, doesn't use his hide much and eats like a pig.

I could have swore that I read someplace that Glossy's belonged in this catagory. I don't know where else to go with it unless I go to the general snake section.

Reako45.... does yours eat mice? I hear that the ones that are bred in civilization are more apt to eat mice. I kinda like the wild caught ones though. They just seem more real somehow.

My Glossy is WC, but from an area where there are an abundance of mice & rats. I'm talkin' so abundant that when we go road cruising on summer nights it's hard to avoid them when they race across the road and dart under your car. I was surprised that he didd't take mice @ first, but now he eats like fiend. He even takes the mouse right from my hand while I hold it by the tail. If yours is from a Texas or AZ locale, it may be possible that it was eating primarily lizards.
BTW Glossies fall under the genus Arizona elegans. At one time they were thought to be a sort of faded Gopher snake. I had a herper from wayyy back (late 60's & 70's) refer to them that way. Good luck w/ your Glossy.
