Weezing Milksnake

lucas15 Oct 16, 2006 02:41 PM

Hey there,

Ive got a mexican milk snake and she's about 6 years old now. She has always made slight weezing sounds but I've thought nothing of them as she is very healthy, eating well and that kind of thing.

But recently it has gotten worse (although she seems happy enough). I thought it was the bark but I change it very often to prevent a build up of dust.

I'm just wondering if any of you guys have any idea of whats going on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Luke

Weezing in reptiles is never a good thing. The fact that she has had the whole time you have owned her is very curious. Reptiles that weez often have upper respitory infections- you can only be sure of what she has by going to the vet though. I have never been a bog fan of bark, however i have never heard of it causing this reaction in snakes. Have you tried other bedding like snake aspen? Or regular news paper? If it is because of the bedding this should help. Other than that keep the enclosure dry and warm- dont brumate, and get it to the vet if you feel that it is serious. good luck

Hey,

Thanks for all your help. I have used aspen and various other types of substrate. Is sounds like she makes the noise when she breathes in. I fed her tonight and she didn't make any noise while eating.

She always has a fresh bowl of water but I think i'll take the advice of upping the temperature a little bit.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Luke

One of my honduran breeders began a slighty wheezing that I noticed during feeding. I treated her with high humidity and raised the temp a hair. Made sure she was hydrated and water bowl was full. It cleared up in days and with very close observation to this day, she hasn't made such sounds since.

That is interesting. i was always under the impression that it needed to be hot and dry? Sounds like yours worked. i had success with tortoises that had RI with hot and dry conditions. I wonder what a vet would say. Anyone have the final word on this?

I have always used more heat and high humidity and I have a very fast recovery rate as well. Usually clears up fully in under a week.
